Modern Warfare 4 puts your Operator, weapons, Equipment, Perks, Field Upgrade, and Killstreaks into individual Multiplayer loadouts. Players using Modern Warfare 4 Bot Lobbies for lower-pressure weapon practice can also use that time to compare recoil, attachments, and complete class setups before moving into regular matches. Create-a-Class unlocks at Player Level 4, so your first goal should be building one dependable class instead of spreading progression across every available weapon.
1. Start With the Job of Your Loadout
Don’t choose attachments first. Decide how and where you expect the class to fight, then build the rest of the setup around that role.
| Class Role | Primary Focus | Supporting Tools |
| Close Range | Fast short-range fights | Recovery, movement, entry utility |
| General Purpose | Flexible mid-range combat | Balanced utility |
| Objective | Holding or attacking positions | Smoke, defense, area control |
| Long Range | Controlling longer sightlines | Recon and ranged consistency |
Operators can be assigned individually to loadouts, but the Operator choice itself is cosmetic. Your combat setup comes from the weapons, Equipment, Perks, Field Upgrade, and Killstreaks saved with that class.
Best starting approach: build one general-purpose class first. Add specialized close-range, objective, and long-range classes after your weapon and attachment collection expands.
2. Build Your Shared Attachment Pool Early
Modern Warfare 4 launches with 33 weapons: 24 Primary Weapons, eight Secondary Weapons, and one dedicated melee weapon. Primary categories include Assault Rifles, SMGs, Shotguns, LMGs, Marksman Rifles, and Sniper Rifles.
The important progression mechanic is Shared Attachments. Compatible attachments only need to be unlocked once, allowing other supported weapons to use them without repeating the same attachment unlock.
Early Weapon Progression
- Choose one dependable Primary Weapon. Pick something suited to the engagement ranges you encounter most often.
- Build its attachment collection. Don’t immediately divide your playtime between several unrelated weapons.
- Check compatibility on new weapons. Previously unlocked Shared Attachments can make a fresh weapon easier to configure.
- Test the new setup before grinding further. Use the Firing Range to check whether the weapon actually fits your intended role.
- Fully level your core weapons. Save longer progression grinds for guns you plan to keep using.
If a weapon level would award a Shared Attachment you already own, the system instead provides a Bonus Level Up. Building an attachment library therefore supports later weapon progression rather than benefiting only your first gun.
3. Fix a Weapon’s Weaknesses in Gunsmith
Gunsmith displays major performance categories such as Damage, Range, Accuracy, Mobility, and Handling, with more detailed statistics available for closer inspection.
Instead of filling slots randomly, identify what the weapon needs.
| If You Need | Focus On |
| Faster close-range response | Handling and mobility |
| Better ranged consistency | Range and controllability |
| Easier recoil management | Accuracy and control-related changes |
| A neutral starting build | Gunny Balanced setup |
| A specialized setup | Gunny Short Range or Long Range setup |
Gunny Attachment Optimizer generates suggested configurations using attachments you’ve already unlocked. Treat these builds as starting points, then adjust them after testing the weapon yourself.
4. Save Apex Attachments for Core Weapons
Apex Attachments are earned at the end of the progression path for supported weapons. They occupy a dedicated Apex position rather than consuming a normal attachment slot.
These modifications can alter how a weapon functions. The M4 Hurricane, for example, converts the M4 to a high-capacity 5.7x28mm configuration with a higher fire rate. The Han X20 Skybreaker gives the Han 86 an airburst system intended to attack enemies behind cover.
Some Apex Attachments can also restrict conventional attachment categories, so equipping one still involves build tradeoffs.
Apex Progression Priority
Highest priority: Main weapon you regularly use
Second priority: Backup weapon for another engagement range
Lower priority: Situational or experimental weapons
Don’t max every gun just because an Apex option exists. Finish the weapons that support your established classes first.
5. Pair Equipment With What Your Weapon Cannot Do
MW4’s launch Multiplayer pool contains nine Tactical items and 11 Lethal items. These slots are most useful when they solve problems your Primary Weapon cannot handle.
For pushing: Stim can immediately begin health regeneration, refresh Tactical Sprint, and help mitigate flash and stun effects.
For crossing exposed ground: Smoke Grenades can block sightlines and help create safer movement opportunities.
For information: Snapshot Grenades can reveal enemies within their affected area for a short period.
For defending space: Mines, traps, C4, Thermite, and other area-denial options can make an objective or approach harder to push freely.
6. Choose a Field Upgrade by Purpose
Field Upgrades recharge during matches and add utility beyond your normal Equipment.
| Need | Field Upgrade |
| Nearby enemy information | Portable Radar |
| Ammo and equipment | Munitions Box |
| Defensive protection | Trophy System |
| Electronic disruption | DDOS |
| Extended smoke coverage | Smoke Wall |
| Area control | Razor Wire Trap |
| Planned respawn position | Tactical Insertion |
This makes Field Upgrade selection especially important for specialized classes. An objective loadout may gain more from defensive utility, while another class may need reconnaissance or resupply.
7. Add Perks and Killstreaks Last
MW4 uses a Pick 3 Perk structure, with one Perk selected from each category. Confirmed options include Quick Fix, Overkill, Ghost, Hardline, Bomb Squad, Fast Hands, Ninja, Battle Hardened, Scavenger, Tracker, and Cold-Blooded.
Choose them after establishing the class’s weapon and purpose.
Class-Building Order
- Primary Weapon
- Gunsmith configuration
- Secondary Weapon
- Tactical and Lethal Equipment
- Field Upgrade
- Three Perks
- Killstreak package
- Operator
Killstreaks are saved per loadout, so your aggressive, defensive, and general-purpose classes don’t need to use identical streak selections.
8. Use Multiplayer Progression to Support DMZ
Weapon progression is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ. Leveling a weapon in either mode contributes to its progression, while compatible Shared Attachments remain available once unlocked.
DMZ has its own preparation and economy systems. At the Forward Operating Base, unlocked weapons and attachments can be accessed through Gunsmith when you have the required DMZ Cash. Weapons can also be obtained during deployments, purchased through the FOB Vendor, or created through DMZ’s available weapon-acquisition systems.
Players considering optional progression resources such as MW4 DMZ Items for sale should keep these systems separate. Weapon levels, Shared Attachments, DMZ Cash, and extracted resources don’t perform the same function, so knowing which part of your setup is actually limiting progression prevents wasted resources.
Quick Loadout Checklist
Before taking a new class into regular Multiplayer, check the full setup:
- Role: Does the class have a specific job?
- Primary: Does the weapon fit the expected engagement range?
- Attachments: Are they fixing an actual weakness?
- Equipment: Does it cover something the weapon cannot?
- Field Upgrade: Does it support the class’s role?
- Perks: Do all three contribute to the intended playstyle?
- Killstreaks: Are they appropriate for how you expect to play?
- Firing Range: Have you tested recoil and weapon behavior?
Once Create-a-Class is available, concentrate progression on one reliable Primary Weapon and use it to establish a useful Shared Attachment pool. Expand into specialized classes only after that foundation is working, then pursue Apex Attachments for the weapons you actually intend to keep. Test major Gunsmith changes in the Firing Range and adjust the entire loadout as a unit instead of treating the Primary Weapon as the only part that matters.
